The spectacular setting Pinara can be visited on an inland excursion from Fethiye.
It was one of the 6 major cities of the Lycian League. Today, visitors can see the ruins of the acropolis, rock tombs, a 4th century B.C. sarcophagus and a Roman temple thought to belong to Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. Pictured here is the Greek-style amphitheatre, which has 27 seating rows divided by stairs into 9 sections. |

Gemiler Island (on our Fethiye itinerary) has the remains of a significant Byzantine settlement where visitors can see some splendid mosaic floors.
Legends tell of a princess whose skin was so sensitive to the sun that her subjects built a covered road (pictured here) stretching all the way from her palace to the sea, so that she could walk down to the water's edge for a swim. |
